rolandratEarlier this week I gained a new friend in the shape of a cheeky little Rodent called Roland. He is now one of my Twitter buddies and I have to say he’s a humorous chap. Here’s one of his recent tweets that I am supporting.

The Mac then and now
With the 25th anniversary of the first Macintosh computer coming up on January 24th, 2009, I thought I’d reflect on the first Mac I used and my current Mac. Both are pictured above. The first Mac I used was a Macintosh Plus back in 1986. I was at college back then and I think it took most of the Graphic Design departments yearly budget to buy 2 of the damned things. It did however start my love affair with Apple, since then I’ve been a Mac evangelist and never had any other PC right up to and including the present where I currently have 5 Macs in various forms.

The first ‘project’ I undertook on the Mac Plus was an origami assignment, a pictorial ‘how to’ fold an origami box. Most of the work was done in Macpaint, the Apple precursor to photoshop (screenshot below courtesy of Wikipedia) and printed out on a dot matrix printer. Truly revolutionary in my cocooned college world.

Now I have an iMac that could’ve probably run NASA back then but I’m doing pretty much the same thing, drawing pretty pictures on a computer screen.

Happy Birthday Mac

here’s looking forward to the next 25 years

I saw this on TV the other day and thought it to be very profound and effective. It goes something like this…

If you’re asking me to do work for you, you may only have 2 off the triangle.
Examples:
If you want the work Good & Cheap, don’t expect it Fast
If you want the work Good & Fast, don’t expect it Cheap
If you want the work Fast & Cheap, don’t expect it Good

This is a wonderful way of looking at commissioning any type of work, whether it’s a plumber, a web designer or a decorator.

Having watched the advert for the Oral-B electric toothbrush, the one where things start shaking and moving, it dawned on me that if we wish to save the environment, we must all ditch our electric tooth brushes and revert back to manual brushing.

How much energy are we wasting by charging up these unnecessary devices? For those that don’t clean their teeth, well done for saving the planet!!! Pity about your smelly breath mouth though.

I heard someone talking on the radio last night about rare breed sausages and bacon and it got me to thinking… If the bloody pigs weren’t killed in the first place they wouldn’t be rare breed, maybe they could flourish and not become rare.

I bet they taste good though.

ZX Spectrum retro gaming fun

Tags:   •  Posted in : wonderment |

We were having a conversation in the office about old computers and games and it got me wondering about my old ZX Spectrum and the hours of my life I wasted on playing games on that machine, so I popped off onto the good old interwebby and had a reminisce. Here’s the screenshots of some of the cutting edge games I wondered at…

Update: I’ve been and downloaded a ZXC Spectrum emulator

Right, this is my Friday morning rant and it’s inspired by the stupidity of Facebook and factions that perpetuate the use of ‘English (US)’ and ‘English (UK)’.

I noticed it on the new Facebook settings and would like to point out THERE’S ONLY ONE ENGLISH it’s ENGLISH. The Americans don’t have another language, it’s ENGLISH, they speak ENGLISH. Why do they want their own language? The Australians don’t have English (Aus) and the Canadians don’t have English (Can). Or am I wrong? Do they have choices in the software they install? Do the Scottish get English (Scot) and the Welsh, English (Welsh)? I think not. So why are the Americans so important as to have their own bloody language? It’s ENGLISH, get over yourselves!!!

I blame Mr Gates, he introduced it.

Dapper Dan

Tags:   •  Posted in : wonderment |

So ‘Man of constant sorrow’ was playing on our sound system at work and it got me to wondering about Dapper Dan’s Pomade. After a lil research I found it’s a fictional hair product but ya can buy replica tins and fill with your own pomade.

It’s a pity I’ve not got much hair else this would be tempting.

On the 8th minute, of the 8th hour, of the 8th day, of the 8th month of 2008 is said to be doomsday time. The world will stop turning and we’ll all drop off into outer space or something like that. Well as a bona fide super hero I can’t let that happen, I will do everything in my power to keep the world turning and hopefully get us past this harrowing point in our history.

If I succeed life should carry on as normal, if not I’ll see you in space, I’ll be the one flying past with a red cape.

Up and Atom…

UPDATE: As you can tell (’cus you’re still alive) I managed to avert the end of the world and save the Earth. Don’t ask me how, you wouldn’t understand if I explained. Here’s till 09:09 09.09.09 when I must next thwart evil and once again save the Earth.

After long, long years of hunting and searching I finally found the band that started the whole heavy metal revolution in a little semi-detached house in Coalville. Their name Chrome Molly, a right royal bunch of reprobates without a lie, but they rocked the 80’s away in their own inimitable style racking up top 75 hits and getting a few stadium gigs under their belts. Born out of a desire to get out of their respective drab lives, the band members embarked on a decade long journey of self discovery, women, mini-buses, mini-skirts and rock and roll. An awesome time was had by all.

What are they doing now? Visit their website to find out… www.chromemolly.com
