I’ve heard this rumour from 4 different sources now and it appears we may well be getting a Pizza Express in Market harborough on the site of the old Peacock Pub. What affect will this have on the other restaurants in town? The likes of Ascoughs Bistro will surely feel the pinch and with Gondola Holdings, the owners of the chain already having a foothold in the town with Zizzi’s, surely this will affect the latter’s takings. Will the likes of The White Lion be squeezed even more? The Union Inn is already reported to have closed it’s doors ’till further notice’, how long before more will go to the wall?

I shall watch with eager anticipation.

One such rumour is at http://liberalengland.blogspot.com

Update : It appears the rumours are true, here’s a job advert in The Caterer Magazine (see it HERE) brought to my attention on Twitter by solarpilchard

Update 2 : Work starts, scaffolding is beginning to go up.

Scaffolding work begins on the new Pizza Express

Having done some investigation I found this retail chain www.chipsworld.co.uk which has got quite a few stores throughout the UK, however none in Leicestershire which suggests Harborough would be a good location. The group tout themselves as ‘The UK’s Largest Independent Video Game Retailer’ which could give Blockbuster a run for their money. Competition is good.

A friend and client of ours had a moment of madness whilst the snow had deeply covered the ground in Market Harborough this February and towed his son 500 yards behind his pick up truck. This may sound to most as utterly stupid and irresponsible and if you’d believe the media frenzy he should be hung, drawn and quartered. However what perturbs me is the sensationalism that inevitably follows s very small moment of stupidity.

The dad in question is not a moronic, unthinking, idiot, rather he’s a good bloke who thought he’d do as people in snow covered countries do for their kids every day and give his son a tow behind his car. Now, here is where the media go to town. Admittedly the act was done at rush hour traffic time but there were no cars on the road except those that were parked, thses were the cars that he ‘overtook’. If you’d believe the press he was weaving in and out of traffic, dragging his lad within inches of speeding wheels. The bloke went 500 yards at 8mph.

He thought the act so insignificant that he drove past the local Police station. Again the press would believe a high speed chase took place to catch him. The reality is a policeman ran out of the station and caught him on foot, that was the speed at which he was dragging his son who was wearing more protective clothing than any of the skateboarder kids who skate yards from oncoming traffic.

So, was it a stupid act? Yes most definitely but what really gets my goat is how it’s blown up out of all proportion.

UPDATE: I’m glad to see no custodial sentence was given Market Harborough man spared jail

I noticed a little yellow planning application attached to a lamp post near our Studio the other day and decided to investigate on the Planning Online site. The following image is the elevation plans for a 3 storey hotel and restaurant facility on St Marys Road. It is looking like ‘It’s a Gas’ is maybe being turned into the restaurant on these plans.

I’ll be keeping my eye on this to see further developments and if planning is given. It’s a quite ambitious project and will alter the face of St Marys Road quite a lot.

The ground has been broken and concrete pilings have been sunk.

But what does this mean for the town of Market Harborough? Well I’m guessing that this was one of the final nails in the coffin of the Threshers franchise, that and Bargain Booze and apart from that no adverse effect will be felt by other stores, maybe the supermarkets, but hey they make enough profit. Hopefully, having a store at that end of St Mary’s Road will help invigorate that area of town.

The only other worry that may arise is that if the under 18 policing policy of Majestic is lapse then there may be a few drunken minors on Symington wreck.

Now the building is finished for Majestic Wines, will they actually move in? I was led to believe that the upper level would be a warehouse for the store but the upstairs are now flats for sale, so what does this mean for majestic? I’ll be keeping my eye on this one.

I’ve recently examined the advertising boards for the flats and on the

artists impression there are shop signs for Majestic, so it does appear to be a wine warehouse.

As I was walking by the train station this weekend I noticed the new bridge over the River Welland (above). I knew from a planning application for the Harborough Rubber development that this was part of the extension to the Millennium Mile which will run down by the new ’social’ housing development next to Lidl and finish facing the train station.

I’m glad that some socially aware development has been incorporated in the plans for this area and hope phase 2 of the Harborough Rubber development goes ahead with the listed building getting a deserved overall.

Just out of interest, is it still a Millennium Mile if it’s longer than a mile?
